Strait 350, diesel: The parts manual shows an external tank type block heater, but not where it attaches to the block. Does any one have one, and can you tell me where to find the ports to plumb one in.

JUST ADDED ONE TO MY 350-B CRAWLER LOADER. UNIT IS TUBE TYPE AND MUST MOUNT VERTICAL. TIGHT FIT IF INSTALLED IN LOCATION SHOWN. UNIT WAS INSTALLED LOWER END AT DRAIN COCK, AND UPPER LOCATION AT DRILLED AND TAPPED PORT DESCRIBED IN PAPER WORK. DID HAVE PROBLEM WITH SPACE TO HOSE UP. THIS REQUIRED ME TO PURCHASE THE 2 ATTACHMENT FITTINGS FROM DEERE TO GIVE ME ENOUGH ROOM. UNIT WORKS FINE IF YOU GIVE IT AN HOUR OR TWO WARM THINGS UP.

I installed one in my 350 in the back of the block when I had the engine out. I bought it from a sharp parts person at a Massey Ferguson dealer for 1/3 the price Deere wanted. The block heater is made with pipe thread and screwed into the water jacket. Massey must have used it on something they built. I would give you the part number but it was a few years ago.

I've used the plug on the water pump [if so equipped for the heated water]..

Any tank-type heater is fine. When I worked for Deere we used Katz or Zero-zone - only because they were the most common locally. Most tank-heaters work by thermo-siphon so they must be mounted vertically. The bottom hose hooks into the block-drain port on the 350's 152 c.i. engine. The top hose of the heater hooks to the thermostat housing. On some early Deeres, the thermostat housing has a raised boss that is meant to be drilled and tapped with pipe-threads for a heater connection. Later Deere's it came pre-drilled and tapped with a pipe-plug stuck into it. So, you might have to pull the thermostat housing off, drill it and tap it.
