I have a JD 555-C crawler/loader that runs good, except recently, the bearings on the rear drive went out (the track on that side is loose and the sprocket wobbles now so I assume that is what happened).

I called the local JD house to see what it might cost to fix, and they called back in a few days, and said they couldn't even get parts for that machine anymore (it's old but not that old was my thought).

I'm reasonably mechanical and have a nice shop I could work on it in - but how hard would this be
to fix, assuming some one of you fine folks can point me at a supplier of bearings, etc??? I assume, I'd have to take the track on that side off, and then carefully disassemble the rear drive, then reassemble with new bearings, seals, etc.

Any pointers? Would it be useful to purchase on of the parts manuals for this machine on eBay before proceeding assuming I can find parts?

Jeff, call Ricky at yellowhouse in Abilene.
1-800-592-4468. He will sure enough tell you whether they are available and maybe even aftermarket. They also have a store in Lubbock I think, but Rick can find the parts for you.

I find it very hard to believe Deere doesn't sell final drive parts for a 555..5 months ago I rebuilt a final on a straight 450 with Deere parts.....Where are you located?? I have an aftermarket source in NE Ohio...Paint Valley Equipment in Millersburg , Ohio...Near Wooster..Paint Valley will help with parts or maybe a complete used or rebuilt final drive..Go to EBAY and get a tech manual and parts book..

I found them not having parts a little hard to believe too. Sounds maybe more like they just don't want to mess with it but didn't want to say that. I'm in the Texas panhandle - and the JD house I called was in Amarillo, but there may be another JD industrial dealer in Lubbuck, so maybe I should try them or worst case I guess I can give your guys a call but shipping might be alot depending upon what parts end up involved.

Do you or anyone else know what the differences between just the 555, 555-A, 555-B, 555-C and other variants are when it comes to the parts manual? Do I have to find one explicitly for a 555-C to be useful or would any of them work about as well?

Thanks --J

There actually never was a 555C ... it may just have a "C" in the serial number. The way to get the right parts is by serial number. I looked up some of the older version parts and a couple are "obsolete" .. But that may be circumvented by using a combination of newer parts. Also many of the final drives are the same with other machines... 555B --- 450E's etc.. Go to Deere parts.com and you can look up parts and then check the "where used" function and it will tell you what other machines that part is used in. Sounds like the original dealer didnt want to make any effort... Also, you might get lucky and only need bearings and a seal.. I'd take it apart and see what you need..
