Replacing Deere 310A Steering Valve

Looks like I've got a bad steering valve in my backhoe. The steering veers to the right ever so slightly while roading it. It constantly has to be pulled back to the left to keep straight. And every so often it will turn hard right. This happened the first time while I was roading it home at top speed. VERY DANGEROUS. The steering wheel also turns continuously in both directions. In other words it doesn't stop. So now I want to replace the steering valve and wonder if the valve has to be timed in any way? Tech manual mentions nothing.
Thanks.

Thanks guys,
I never thought about it being in the cylinder. Trouble shooting guide in tech manual points to a bad gerotor or centering springs in the steering valve with the mentioned symptoms. To troubleshoot for gerotor leakage it suggests to turn steering wheel to extreme left (steering arm stop against axle) and record the amount of time it takes to make one full turn with 60lbs-in while at idle speed. If the time is less than 4 seconds then either the valve or cylinder is bad. Looks like I need to disconnect and plug the steering hoses and see what happens when I turn the steering. I bought a used steering valve with a 90 warranty for $325. Maybe they will consider refunding if I find the cylinder to be the problem. I was under the impression that since the steering didn't stop that I had a bad valve. Now it makes a little more since as I think about what you guys have mentioned. The manual mentions to turn from "stop to stop". Now I understand this is talking about the action of the cylinder not some mechanical limiter in the steering valve. The stop action is actually the steering arm stop pushing against the axle...correct?
Have I confused you?
I am currently in Kuwait and will be home next Friday. I'll give it another go then.
Thanks for your help.

You say it turns continuously, so I'm assuming its a Char-Lynn style valve. have you checked the cylinder packings ?? Sounds like that might be the problem. I'd change those first...much cheaper... $20 for a kit as opposed to $900 for a valve.

Why aren't you just fixing it, instead of replacing? They were prone to internal o-ring failure until Deere came up with a new material for the o-rings. Or are you just replacing one of the internal valve assemblies?
