question . 6-354 perkins unusual problem the engine seems to get lazy longer it runs .it dosent seem to run to full rated rpm and power is lazier than should be . then if you let it idle for a few minutes it runs alot better ? i think it is problem with injection pump ? anyway it also seems to have a puffy miss in exhaust when it runs poorly but if you let idle for couple minutes power and smoothness returns . anyway has new injectors ect and engine is decent condition also read somewhere that these perkins 354 timing gears wear a bit and injection timing retards ? anyway looking fo some opinions ????? any responces appreciated !!!

I have a 354 Perkins in my Massey combine. It did the same thing and would sometimes actually quit. This was the problem. It had a fuel pump on the back side of the engine that would transfer fuel from the tank to the injection pump. Under high fuel flow in the line to the pump from the fuel tank it would lift sediment (bean dust). This sediment would come up against a check valve on the inlet side of the pump. The hole was so small the wad of bean dust would just cover the hole and starve the engine. It would sit and idle all day. Put a heavy load on it, increase the fuel flow and the trash would be pulled up. If it died it would start again after the trash settled downward from the check valve. It was an interesting problem to troubleshoot. I decided to put a new fuel pump on and by chance happened to see the brown stuff in the check valve. Like I said it was a big chunk (looked like a wad of chew) and never would have went through the seat of the check valve.

You read right about the timing train esp the pump that is mounted vertical but I doubt if that is your problem because it would be preforming badly all the time,it sound more like a fuel supply problem,is the tank vented, good flow of fuel from it,is the gauze filter in the priming pump clean, are the fuel filters clean,is there any moisture in the diesel, are all the joints good and not drawing air,if your engine has a glow plug in the intake manifold check it to make sure that its not leaking when the engine is running.
