Just finished my undercarriage rebuild. Sprockets, tracks, rollers, idlers, etc. Getting ready to bolt on pyramid pads on. Been reading posts about excessive wear on the undercarriage due to 20 inch swamp pads. Not wanting to go throught this ordeal again for a long time, I would like to know the downside of cutting 4 inches off of each side of the pads to make them 12 inch. or even 3 inches per side to leave 14 inch pads? Fundings are tapped out so I would rather not purchase new pads.

My pyramid pads have a 3/8" hardened ketstock welded across the top of each shoe for added traction. By reducing the length, the ground pressure should increase to help insure I don't do a lot of spinning. It's over $1800 for new pads. For now I think cutting 3 to 4 inches off each end will lessen the wear. I will have make sure to check for build up around the rollers and sprockets more often. Thanks for the feedback and grat tip on removing the paint. I plan to anti-sieze the bolts so If I finds some pads I can reuse them.

I had a JD 450 loader someone had put dozer tracks on. These are 2 inches wider Than loader tracks & were cutting into loader frame so I cut 2 inches off the inside where it was rubbing. Worked great. End of problems. I was worried about one side being longer than the other but no problem.

Hi Bent1.Unless you're working in soft ground,you have the wrong tracks on your machine.Cutting the plates short will probably just weaken them & make them bend worse.Also...if you just spent money & time on your chains/sprockets/rollers, putting the wrong shoes on will make your efforts seem a waste of time & money.Another issue will be the extra wear from track spin...those pyramid plates will just spin when you really wanna be pushing....your bushes/sprockets will wear in no time.
You should be able to find a good deal on shoes from a non major track supplier,or importer.

Oh, I just remembered , I didn't ask if you cleaned the paint off the top of the track chains. If you didn't , the pads will come loose after some use..I use a rosebud torch and just flash the paint off , then wire brush burnt paint powder off....

The only downside to cutting off track shoes is the possibility of debris [ roots , rocks , etc.] from being drawn into areas like between final drives and tracks..Usually there's only so much space between these areas..Other than that , smaller shoes take a lot of stress off the driveline..
