My luck! Broke Tach changing alternator on JD450C

I pulled the dash panel on my JD450C to wire a new alternator. While that project is still in the construction stage, I see that I created another. When I put the dash panel back on I noticed the tachometer no longer worked. Well, that's par for the course. So I removed the panel and noticed the cable had come loose from the tachometer. So I screwed the cable back on and replaced the dash panel. Now the tachometer is real erratic. It reads 3500RPM when it was reading about 2500RPM. Sometimes it pegs out. I believe it read correctly the other day after I drove the tractor for a while but that was short lived. I know there are just a few options: cable, tachometer or maybe something at the engine. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to determine the problem? As always I appreciate your comments.
Thanks,
RussT

I assume this tach is speedometer cable driven. If so I would Pull cable out, clean and lube, and chamfer the ends of it on the grinder. This allows easy penitration into the square female recess of the end of the cable.Be sure you have it in the recess before you tighten. CENTAUR
