I have a 1971 JD 350B with a reverser after using it for about 30 min i began to notice lite smoke coming from under the engine area. Checked breather tube but found no problem there. Appears to be coming from down by the bell housing. Checked the reverser oil level and found it low. Refilled to correct level and lost about a quart in about one hour of use. only lite oil film on belly pan, cannot find leak. When machine is up to temp i can smell hot hydraulic fluid. Reverser works fine.

If it's the same as later models, there is a small rubber hose that goes to the front. To the bottom of the rad I think. It has to be a hose rated for oil. I had a 355D loader and someone had put a piece of heater hose on. Of course the heater hose deteriorated and I had to go to a JD dealer to get the proper hose. Even hose specialty shops couldn't match it up. I'm not sure if it was tranny or reverser. I've also heard that reverser seals can go and allow the oil to go into the tranny. Hope this helps. Dave

The hose can be bought at just about any industrial supply place in bulk. I buy mine from McMaster. Deere sells it in cut lenghts instead of bulk and it cost three times as much.

Probably won't work fine for long. The center bearing assembly tends to wear in the reverser -since it's the smallest. It is in-line with two other bearing assemblies - but if one gets loose - they all gets loose since they are Timken-style cup and cone adjustable bearings. So, once loose, the input shaft wobbles in front of the reverser and takes out the seal.

Where is the oil going?? nothing on the ground where i park it and nothing on the belly pan except for a small amount. I checked the oil lines while running and floor plates off. no leaks. Is the oil building up inside the bell housing??

As long as you're sure you have a B, and not a C, it has to come out somewhere. As I stated earlier, the most common place for a leak is in front - and it would drip out the bottom where reverser bolts to the engine. But, with a belly-pan in place, it can sometimes be hard to tell. And, of course, there are other places that can leak - including hoses, cooler up front, etc. Now - if your 350 was a C or newer - with wet steering cluthes - having reverser oil dissappear and wind up in the steering-clutch housings is a common problem.
