Richard,

D-2 steering clutches are not easy, but can be done if you have a couple of floor jacks (assuming you have a concrete floor), a large bar type puller for the sprocket, torches for the frozen bolts, blocking and a buddy to help you with the heavy pieces. If you have a shop crane, it will be easier.

Break & walk the machine off the track and then pull the track frame, sprocket and the fender/side panel. The final can be pulled with a couple of floor jacks & blocking, but it is awkward and heavy. A shop crane & slings work better if you have them.

We rebuilt our D-2 a few years ago ended up with some good used parts from a donor tractor, so if you need anything, feel free to email.

Good luck,
Scott

Richard,

Steering clutch replacement on a D 2 is about like doing a tonsillectomy from the rear, lower orifice. The track will have to be removed by loosening or breaking, then take the sprocket off, then the final drive housing to get to the clutches. Unfortunately, Cat Engineers did not have the forethought to provide access to the clutches from under the seat as they did on the D6 9U. Fair amount of heavy lifting, rusty bolts and skint knuckles if like most.
