Questions about Delco Remy 24V alternators

What are the differences between the Delco Remy 20si and the 27si alternators, other than output and physical size? Are the turn-on RPMs different between the two?

I am looking to update an older Cat 944 loader to an alternator and Fleetpride sent me the two to choose from.

The 20si is quite a bit more money and has less output. It appears that I will have to modify the mounts & pulley regardless of which one I use, so should I just use the cheaper 27si?

Any help will be appreciated.

Scott

Scott, I think the difference is mostly size and mounting. Just be sure what is ground on your machine + or -. Some of these alts can be connected either way you need Leece Neville is often that way. Also was your gen a sealed unit? Some on loaders are. If thats the case take a hard look at your operating conditions. Dusty conditions and a radiator that blows out the back can mean that the alt will get plenty of dusty air to chew up the brushes. I know of a contractor who put a non-sealed alt on a Dresser 530 because they didn't want to spend for the sealed one. It wasn't long before they had to go buy the sealed one anyway. Large output alts often are not sealed because they need the cooling. The other option for high output is sealed and oil cooled like on some motorcoaches (24v and 250A). Old diesel machines have small electric demands so they don't need the high output. I hope this helps with your decision. Chuck

Chuck,

Thanks for the reply. The 20si is a brushless unit and if memory serves, is also the type I have seen on many newer Cat machines. Your comments about the longevity in dirty conditions make sense. This loader has a pusher fan so it will be a factor. Although the 20si is more money, it makes more sense. Thanks for the help!
