Fluid versus Oil versus Fluid

I have hydraulic fluid in my 1948 hough loader, my 3 point back hoe, and 3 tractor hydraulic systems. I have automatic transmission fluid in my 70s model skidloader and my dump trailer hydraulics systems. Now my mitsubishi dozer calls for 10w motor oil for the hydraulics. Can anyone explain why I can't use regular hydraulic fluid in all of my hydraulic systems?

I hope someone responds to your good question. I have the same situation and don't understand why I can't use (or maybe I can) TDH type oil, like Case HyTran for all the applications, or maybe ATF. I've read generic stuff about film properties, foaming, etc., but I really wonder whether some of the newer oils might serve all purposes. does anyone really, really know?

Charlie, check out the replies on Tractor talks forum. I posted same question. Pretty good information. Kind of a pain isn't it.

Thanks. Those were interesting and useful. I'd still like to see one higher level of detail about the fluid properties and how to use the cited specs on fluids that are available.
