Whenever I see Cat guys talk about old Caterpillars they always say "parts are no problem, you can still get them at the dealer". I was always a bit skeptical that Cat would stock a full complement of parts for 40+ year old machines, but many of these guys insist that's the case. So if you can't find everything you need used, and can afford new parts, try the dealer. Heck, try the dealer just for sh*ts and giggles just to see if they do actually have them. It'd be interesting to see if that "parts from the dealer" claim holds any water.

So the CAT dealer doesn't have the parts huh? That's interesting, I have an IH crawler and they always catch he11 for the "you can't get parts for 'dem IH's anymore!" But when I suggest that parts availability for nearly any machine 40+ years old is going to be spotty at best, alot of the Cat guys insist everything's still available from the dealer. "Just walk right in and get it" they say. Well, I guess that's not necessarily the case, especially considering how popular the D8's from the 50's were.

Anyway, I'd suspect you can find a used gearset somewhere. Quite few old D8's still floating around.

also try several Cat dealers. I wager you will find one that will help you out. some just don't seem to have the time to help out when they sense that there isn't going to be a lot of $$$ spent. we run into that problem quite often. If you don't find something soon, email for names and numbers.
