I bought a TD 9 91 series crawler last year and have been using it to reclaim old fields on my property in Northern Ontario, Canada. It is lots of fun to use and great on fuel but I had nothing but problems getting it started. It was almost impossible to start on gas after it had rained and I was told by one older contracter who has owned a few of these machines to get rid of the magneto and replace it with a distributor. I have heard of some operators starting them on diesel and was wondering if this would damage the machine. I have heard that I should never use ether as it may damage the engine. Any experts out there who could give me some advice?

Before you change anything check that the butterfly valves in your inlet manifold aren't sticking. regards..... ..Phil

Thanks guys! I am planning on building a shed to keep my TD 9 and some other equipment in this summer so that may solve my problem. I do have a new coil and condenser so the problem shouldn't be electrical. The previous owner never had a problem but he kept the machine inside. Have any of you ever replaced the magneto with a distributor? Merci Hector! Il n'y pas de craque sur le magneto. Es-ce que le tracteur demarrerais mieux si je remplacais le magneto par un distributeur?
Did I get that right? My French isn't the best :)

I had this problem with my TD-14 till I cut the side out of a anti freeze jug and made a house for the mag and no more problems

Sounds like your ignition system is getting shorted out by the moisture getting into it. Is there any way you can seal gaps with silcone etc where moisture might be getting into the electrical system? And maybe keep it under cover if you know it's going to rain? I used to have a Datsun B210 a long time ago and it would do that once in a while after it rained. Some old time mechanic guy helped me out one day when my car was just barely sputtering like it was only running on one or two cylinders (it was snowing that day). He took this silicone spray stuff and just started spraying it all over the plug wires and distributor. I was a little apprehensive about what he was doing because I thought the silicone would get into the electrical connections between the distributor, wires and plugs and prevent the transmission of the voltage. But, like maqic the motor straightened right out and started purring like a kitten. The silicone displaced the water that had gotten into the distributor and wires and served to insulate the components against grounding/arcing. After that the engine warmed up and drove the rest of the moisture off, it ran great thereafter.

You can also go to the redpower site linked below, they can definitely help you if your problem persists (lots of guys with IH gas over diesels there).
