I posted a ? the other day and got the wrong answer. I need to know what the standard dia. is for the front crankshaft seal, the one that is in the timing gear cover. My crank is 2.625 is that standard ? Thanks again.

Hi Kelley,
None of my manuals list a spec for the seal journal area. It is a raised section behind the pulley that can be reground .030 under to fit the optional seal or a speedy sleeve could be used if the seal has worn a groove in the shaft. About the only way you could tell whether it is the original diameter or not would be to check the seal number.

Thanks, finally getting my parts together. Rest of my bearings should come tomorrow. Been a challange, but will be worth the trouble to save one from going to the scrap yard. I'll try to send you a picture when I get it done. Kelley

A thousand pardons, please, yes, gave wrong answer to your question on seal dia, gave you crank journal info rather than seal size, that being the case do not know size of crank where seal runs.

Both of my manuals for D315[one for engine, one for tractor] lists standard crank diameter for 7U onward as 3.499-3.500,[earlier models crank diameter is 2.999-3.000],it is not likely both manuals are wrong.[connecting rod journals for earlier engines is 2.624-2.625]is this what you are measuring? your 2.625 seems relatively small in comparison to what is in Cat manual for a crank shaft journal.Am curious as to where discrepancy lies.[Keep your outcome posted][It is possible crank was turned to your posted dimension with a seal to match,as you know, seals are availble by size to fit shaft dia. and outer dia. to fit timing gear cover]

What I'm measuring is the very front of the crank, right ahead of the front gear and behind the fan belt pulley. thanks
