jd 310a rebuilt engine, retighten head bolts?

The manual says to bring engine to operating temperature then loosen the head bolts slightly and then retorque the head. Also reset Valve clearance. Is this old information or should this procedure be followed after installation of new head gasket. The engine has had a fresh rebuild with new pistons and sleeves. Runs great, but I want to make sure I get this right. Thanks

On the ones I did I retorqued after warm up and there was no need to loosen them first as they were allready below torque value. I just was able to get some more on them at the correct setting on my wrench.

It sounds like, if I want to be safe I should at least check the torque. I'll let you know how it works out.

We wondered the same thing, even at the Deere dealership using all Deere parts. Aftermarket companies, e.g. Felpro - make it clear and their gaskets that do not require any retorquing are marked "PT" for perma-torque.

I wouldn't assume that all new gaskets never need retorquing. Just did a newer Volkswagen diesel and it absolutely needs retorquing.

I have rechecked many Deere engines - and those that I rechecked torque after some run-in were stable - no retorquing was needed. Even did the same recently on an older 1010.

The reason for the second valve-lash adjustment directly relates to the head retorquing. If the head-gasket compresses further after some run-in, or "settles", the valve-lash also changes. If the gasket does not settle, the lash stays the same. So, if no retorquing is needed, neither is the second valve-lash adjustment.

Does anybody know who makes Deere gaskets now?

Are you sure the book says loosen the bolts and then retorque? Usually you don"t loosen the head, but just back off a bolt 90 degrees and retorque it, loosening only one at a time, in the tightening sequence.

Not necessary if Deere gaskets were used..If aftermarket was used , I'd check with mfg. suggestions..I usually retorque directly after first warmup after rebuilding when aftermarket gaskets were used...No other retorqueing will be necessary...

Some do and some don't. If in dought, retighten or check with the manufacturer. I have bought vehicles with rebuilt engines that had leaking head gaskets and after retorquing the leak stopped.
