I test drove a case 350 today with a reverser and it would not spin the tracks in 2nd gear, only first when pushed against a large tree, it has the 188 diesel, is this normal, or should it have more pushing power. also, the gears grind when shifting and you must shift to reverse quickly and put into gear to prevent grinding even with clutch depressed, any ideas on what may be wrong? thank you

I just bought a 350 trackloader Sat. I don't really need but for 2500 I couldn't see passing it up. Runs great, undercarriage a little worn, bucket needa patch weld on it. I've spun the tracks in first & second, never tried third. I figured it wouldn't do much for a small machine but now I think it has great power for its size. I'm going to play with it a bit... I always wanted a crawler but couldn't afford the high prices for no more than I'm going to use it.

What are you talking about? There is NO clutch on a 350 and only three foward gears no reverse. You put it in the gear you want and you can go either direction in that gear you can't shift gears and the reverser unless reverser is in neutral and drive shaft has stopped turning. To do what you want to do you need to look at machines that are 5 years old not 30 years old. I have two of these machines but i do everything in first gear as at the end of the day it make take me a hour long to do the job but nothing is broke. and these are old machines not made for fast production work just my opinion.

Matt,

If what you drove has a clutch and a reverse gear in the shift patern, then it's probably a 310, not a 350. The 350 has a reverser on the left armrest, and it has 3 gears, and has a torque converter, so no clutch. CH is correct, you generally don't use the reverser and shift together. Move the reverser to neutral then you can shift. Then either forward or reverse via the reverser.

My 350 is a track loader and has the 3 bar "street" grousers. On hard ground, it will spin the tracks in 2nd. In normal or sticky ground, it may or may not spin them in second. On a dozer with taller grouser bars, I would not be surprised if you couldn't spin the tracks in second.

Also, as CH mentioned, I generally only use mine in 1st gear. I use 2nd and 3rd mainly for "transport" gear. 2nd can be used for loose "pile" loading and moving.

IMHO, using a clutch on one of these machines would get very tiring. I looked at a 310 before I found my 350 and boy am I glad I got the 350.

Where are you located at? I am throwing around the idea of selling my 350.

Good luck,
Jon

I was not sure how the reverser worked, now i realize it does not have a clutch, but it is a 350. so what does the pedal on the floor do, is it just a hydraulic dump valve for the reverser? anyone know what stops the trans from dragging with the pedal depressed, does it have some sort of brake to stop the reverser from dragging so you can shift gears without grinding? i had to pop it into reverse for a moment to stop the gearsfrom spinning to engage a gear.

That is a brake petal, but that stops the diff. Only way to shift tranny is idle machine down wait a bit then try to shift gears. There are no syncros in the tranny so input has to stop turning before you can change gears.

Then you have the wrong trann/diff. in your machine ALL 350s have just 3 foward gear there is no reverse idler in them.Look in your parts book. There is no reason to have a reverse if anything that is a weak link in that tranny. A early tranny will go in there and that is what someone did. I have even seen old oliver tranny/ diff put in them with thinner castings and thinner light duty brake drums.
