I'm looking at a VERY NICE 1978 John Deere 550C dozer. Everything works great, original owner, and it has been well maintained. I think I read somewhere that the transmissions in this era 550 are troublesome (British made?). Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks.

Thanks, guys for your input. I'm really agonizing over whether to buy this, as it's the nicest machine of this era that I've EVER SEEN, and it's priced right. 7K hrs, reman eng & new track chains/sprockets at 5K hrs, 1 owner, stored indoors - for $8K!!

I'd suggest there's a reason an apparently nice, tight Deere crawler of that size is going that cheap. Don't want to be cynical, but the seller may either know it's starting to develop a tranny problem or that it shortly will with 7000 hrs on it. Otherwise sounds like a great deal. You might want to ask jdemaris about it, I'm sure he knows what to look for and can give you the final word on it.

I've never owned a 555, but I've read an awful lot of stories about their transmissions being troublesome and very expensive to fix. Seems most accounts say the crawler itself is a decent unit, but when the tranny problems start up, look out for BIG bucks $$$.
