Ford 555 Nightmare

I have been looking for a 555 for about one year to help get my five acres situated. I just bought a 1980 555 for $7250 that was "supposed" to be in good working order, but needed a few odds and ends to be in really good shape. I went to look at it (6 hours away) and it started easily, ran really well, and the front bucket and hoe worked well. The swing was a bit loose but not bad for a 27 year old machine, otherwise pretty tight. I bought it and had it picked up for $500 ($7750 invested now). It was delivered yesterday. The driver pulled it off of the trailer and stopped in my driveway to put his ramps up and adjust the cones in the road. I got in and pushed the shuttle lever forward and nothing. Pulled the lever back, nothing. Now I'm getting worried. We ended up pulling it back to the barn with my other tractor, and I left it sit for a few hours while I researched. I checked the transmission fluid, clean and full. I started it again and it did move! I was excited to try it out so I drove over to a pile of stuff and lowered the front bucket to pick it up. As soon as the bucket hit the pile, the tractor stopped moving. The engine rpms were fine. I backed up and tried again, same thing. Then I went over to some gravel that I need to move and tried to scoop that up. Same thing. Now I'm getting really worried. I did some searching on the boards here at ytmag and saw that some guys had success blowing some screen and draining sludge from the trans, plus checking some detent springs, etc. I called the local Ford service guy and explained the situation and told him about the posts that I had read. He said that there was no screen, and that I probably needed a total front trans rebuild including a torque converter, clutch bands, and possibly other things. He said that they would put gauges on the unit to see where the pressure loss was and then be able to tell me better, but that it sounded bad. Like $3000 bad. He said that fluid was leaking somewhere and a 27 year old machine like this was just plain worn out. I am stuck. Sorry for the long post, but I need some advice. What a huge mistake.

I wonder if the roll pin inside the clutch housing that goes through the knuckle that moves the shift spool in and out sheared off?? I've seen it once before on a Ford powered Kohring Skytrack masonary loader/lift..

A ray of hope:
I went out about an hour ago to fuss with the backhoe. It started and ran fine, just like always. I pushed the shuttle lever forward and I felt the detent better than in the past and the tractor lurched forward. Before, it would move forward but slowly, if at all. Same in reverse. A nice detent feel, and a lurch. Seemed different. I went up to the pile of junk that caused the tractor to stop before and I had better results this time, but it snowed overnight and the wheels were spinning - which didn't happen before. Traction is a different problem than a slipping transmission. I tried to back up, but it wouldn't move. Same problem as before. Some fiddling with the lever got me out again. I then tried to scrape up the gravel like I failed at yesterday. A different experience this time. I lowered the front bucket and angled it down to dig in. The tractor kept moving and seemed to work fine. I then lowered the bucked even further to lift the front of the tractor off of the ground. It kept moving! I then stopped because I was going to run over an extension cord. I got out and checked the bucket, there was a nice load of gravel in it. I tried to back up to give it another go, no reverse. No detent feeling either.

I have a service call scheduled for tomorrow morning to help check the linkages between the shuttle lever and transmission. We'll see...

You say you checked the trans fluid ? Did you get the right dipstick ? there are 2 of them one for the front part and one for the rear end.These are totally seperate compartments. They are both under covers on the floor boards near the brake pedals. There is also a spin on hyd. filter for the converter tucked up on the frame behind the battery box.

I actually checked both dipsticks. I was told the front one was for the transmission and the rear for the transaxle. The front was at level, and was clean. The rear was a little low, but certainly not empty. Do they take regular hydraulic fluid?

Thanks for the tip on the spin on filter for the converter. I didn't know about that...

A hyd.& trans. oil if you got a New Holland farm tractor dealer close by they will have it and even alot of the parts for those things.

Mike - I've got a couple of the five gallon buckets of hydraulic oil from Sam's club for other machines. Will that work for the main hydraulic, power steering, transmission, and transaxle?

Not in my machine it won't ! LOL I like to stick with OEM It may be able to be used if it meets the specs. for Ford whatever that may be ? It will need to be a trans./hyd. oil and not just a hyd. oil.

Under the machine in the clutch housing behind the engine is a plate..Take the plate down and inside there is a steel line with a conglomeration of fittings on the end of it..Put a gauge in it and test the direction reverser pressure...If it's low, the direction reverser probably needs to be gone through....sorry Unsuspecting souls get ripped everyday...I've been around equipment for nearly 3 decades, and I'm still surprised that most novices to equipment won't hire someone equipment savy to look over a machine before buying it...A $ 100.00 bill could have saved you a lot of agravation and expense.....

Yes, you are right about having an expert check the machine. In my case, I was 400 miles away from home where the backhoe was located. I should have found a local expert I guess.

Sorry I can't help you other than to suggest getting a factory manual and try a little troublehooting with the pressure gages yourself (I got all the manuals I needed for my machine on ebay real cheap). Also, if it's any consolation to you, the price you paid for a full size "running" hoe that's less than 35 years old is pretty cheap. Even if you add in another $3000 to get the tranny rebuilt that would only bring you to just over $10,000. If the motor and hydraulics run great, and the machine is otherwise in decent shape and functional, then $10K is not a bad price for a hoe like that with a freshly rebuilt tranny. A good running '80's model full size TLB with a ROPS, especially one with a brand new transmission can easily command $10K from what I've seen (especially if it's 4WD). Even old TLB's can really command surprising prices due to the extreme versatility and usefulness of a loader backhoe. Hope you get it sorted out, take care.
