i'm so excited! i found somebody who knows about jd crawlers who's willing to tutor me! this afternoon we established that the battery was low (i learned how to read my voltmeter!) and got the battery hooked up to a charger. maybe that's why sam didn't start??? (hello!) then we took the cover off the hydraulic fluid reservoir and determined that installing a new filter might be a good idea. question: the hydraulic fluid is bright orange, something paul, my tutor, had not encountered before. i called smith tractor (to order the filter) and the (very nice) man who answered the phone thought that maybe the people from whom i bought sam used some dyed hydraulic fluid but didn't know of any himself. have you heard of something like this before? is it a bad sign? the fluid had some whitish streaks (water?) but it was not uniformly whitish, just marbled (like a nice steak). i feel so much better having done at least something (marginally) useful today! sam's serial number is e7450000378u; he's a plain 450, there's no letter behind the number stencilled on the body. paul thought that sam probably is a plain 450 and an early model at that; early meaning 1960's vintage. i'm shocked because i don't consider a 1960 anything very old - freddy's birthyear is the same as mine, 1947, and i don't consider myself (very) old. freddy, by the way, is currently working; i've followed advice i got from you people and changed the sparkplugs. but even after that nothing happened. so i took the cover off the transmission box (?) and roughed up the spot where the starter button touches metal inside the box - he's been starting and purring ever since! next weekend i plan to change fluids in freddy's innards - he probably won't start after i get done and you'll hear from me again! but today, i'm very proud of myself and of sam; i can't quite figure out why because i really didn't do anything and he still doesn't start but at least there's some hope now....thank you, all who have written and given me encouragement and advice. you're truly a great bunch of folks!

i bought him on ebay, and he is currently getting a working over including a thorough servicing, some new parts, a few cracks welded, etc., etc... we plan on making this his future permanent home!!

Petralia- Congratulations! Keep going!

Hydraulic oil comes in different colors in an effort to indicate intended use. Additives are used to enhance specific performance properties. Automatic transmission fluid is usually red. General purpose hydraulic oil I get is clear. My point is that if several types get mixed together ??? color will result.

Yes, white streaks usually indicate water contamination and additives are keeping it in suspension. Red + white = pink? If it gets real bad the water will settle out. It is a very strong message that the hydraulic system should be thouroughly drained, filters changed, and re-filled with new fluid.

Also, look around for where the water got into the system and repair as needed. Rubber shifter boots missing? Gasket gone on filler cap? Rag stuck in hole for missing dipstick? Improper use of high pressure washer? And so on...

Good luck! IHank
