Anybody know what the letters after a bearing number mean? Timken 385AA which, far as I can tell, isn"t available. Cat used it only in 933 transmissions.

I was offered a 385A instead, not Timken, which fits the 382A race that the 385AA used. The difference?

Cat designed a lot of bearings. have you checked to see if cat offers one under their own part number? what is the Cat #, I may be able to locate one.

Hi Bob, Cat was my first call. This was the first time they failed me on a bearing. Their number is 4K560, "bearing assembly". From the Timken site, it's a "double cup", meaning 2 bearings and 2 races separated by a spacer. Spacer is reuseable, bearings are rough after the adjacent gear disintegrated.

The Cat parts guy said "Oh, you've got a 933 transmission." Apparently their only application. They had the bearing for the other end of the shaft.

All help appreciated. This is a working tractor.

A set of bearing that have a spacer between them are a matched set. This means that the spacer is ground for clearence of the two bearings. If you look closely there will be a number scratched into the spacer. They are not reusable with new bearings. This information I learned from a TIMPKEN bearing school class at my place of employment. I am a machinist.

Jiles, your Timken rep was correct. I heard from Timken and learned why these were unavailable anywhere else. Sold exclusively to Cat, who chose not to buy any more. Used only in the 933.

Now available through Timken dealers, with a different number. Sold as an assembly, including the spacer, for $2771.28. Some day... as they have no stock. Payment in advance, no refunds.

Guess who's not buying.

Excellent Vaughan, thank you. The first one explained AA as "CONE AND CUP DIFFERENT BORE OR O.D., OR LENGTH AND RADIUS FROM STANDARD BASIC PART NUMBER".

Which I found out when the same bearing number, but A not AA, Chicago Rawhide offered by NAPA, turned out to have a smaller bore. Oddly, the NAPA race (same number and letter) was wider.

I'll be contacting AHR.
