I saw a John Deere 400 with a backhoe and front-end loader advertised for sale, but I don't know much about them. Can anyone tell me what years they were made, horsepower, weight, problems they had, etc.
Thanks

I remember runnin a 400 fresh oughta high school, 1969..I think it was a 65 model but Im not certain. It was a real nice running machine and gave no trouble at all for the year that I ran it, one thing I thought was odd was that it had no neutral on the shuttle shift just F-R was never a problem just stuck in my mind as odd. Also, all the other machines I had run had single axis controls where the JD had joysticks and I got pretty decent on it in short order as did most guys that got on it.

I have a 1965 JD500. You can find much info on the 400 at: >Link

They>Link are quite heavy for their size. My 500 is near 14,000 lbs. They did not have model specific problems that I know of, but do have a few things that any 40 Yr old machine will run in to. For example, the fuel injector pump (roosa master) has parts that will explode at some point and a re-build is approx. $500- $600. Start it and see how the throttle sounds as you run the lever up and down, and check the floor pedal as well. Should be smooth and not tend to "run away" in speed. They came in a clutch model and "powershift" model (semi-auto). The diesel is a 4 cyl 270cu inch that is very reliable. I have found parts at both Deere, and a number of used dealers nationwide. There were not a zillion of these made (total life production of less than a few thousand), so while not difficult to find most parts, you do need to look around to get them. If you go to the Deere site, they have a great parts site with exploded views of all assemblies and availability of parts. The serial number originally was in two places. On the top of the frame on the left side, just to the left of the middle of the engine, and, directly on the rear of the tractor, in front of the backhoe assembly. Take a hard look at the one for sale and make some notes on any questions you have. Post them here, lots of some pretty smart folks that have helped me much.

sold my JD 400 several years ago. A powerful machine. Just older. Bad hose was the only problem I had. Went to tracked excavators then.

Deere made a darn nice little backhoe there..They were about '67-'70 vintage..There weren't any problems to be alarmed about..The usual for a backhoe..For some reason 48 horsepower sticks to mind..A lot smoother running than a 300..They weren't a platform operator station , you have to straddle the transmission..Most had 2 seperate seats, some newer ones had a flip up seat,,Some had a barrel swing cylinder , some had twin cylinder swing..Any machine that old , requires a handy owner..Some 400's had a direction reverser , others had a gear transmission with clutch..Most all parts are still available , a few in boneyards..They had the same basic construction as a 310-410 backhoe component wise...
