I recently purchased a 450C crawler loader. Have used it less than ten hours and started getting the slipping in reverse that's been discussed so much on here. I got a tech manual and following Roy's advice, adjusted the clutch pedal free travel(there was none), freed up the linkages at the clutch pedal and pressure tested the HLR. I have zero spring return pressure at the top of the clutch pedal stroke, the pedal just lays in position to release the clutch fingers(but moves very freely). Pressure test shows about 50psi in all ranges of HLR(except neutral-190psi). If I step on the clutch several times pressure will come up to R190psi H165psi L190psi. I then pulled the transmission cover off to check the roll pin in the clutch valve operating shaft and it appears to be fine. The clutch operating shaft does not move through the 3 1/4" of free travel but starts to move when releasing the clutch fingers(bottom of pedal stroke). Do I have to pull the motor to get inside the clutch housing and inspect return spring and front pin on clutch operating shaft, or do I have other issues? Thanks in advance! Greg

Roy
When the clutch pedal is back against the stop, the 3/4 headed adjustment bolt is 3/8-1/2" off the pedal. I cannot make it seat to the clutch pedal by pushing, turning the linkage arm with a vise grip, or lightly tapping the linkage arm with a punch and hammer. The adjustment bolt is free. I removed it to get the yoke on the linkage arm off to clean and never-seize the yoke. As to the vertical HLR adjuster, the nut was near the top of the threads. I ran it down a couple of turns, but it made no difference. Should the clutch operating shaft turn in the top 3 3/4" of pedal free travel? I assume that's what shuts off oil flow to the HLR? I assume that to access the clutch cross shaft I will need to pull the motor? Thanks for your help.

It is imperative that the clutch cross-shaft is freed up..It won't work worth a darn unless it is free..Pull the engine , pull the clutch housing , and knock out the cross-shaft..Free it up and neverseize it..Install new clutch cross-shaft bushings in the clutch housing.. The pedal is seperate from the cross-shaft..It's a 2 piece arrangement..It's gotta be fixed ...Good Luck..

Kinda sounds as if the clutch cross shaft in the clutch housing is rusted together..Does the bolt move up and down at the pedal when trying to adjust the 3 & 3/4" top of pedal movement..That has to be free to rotate slightly when the pedal is depressed..If it's free ,the bolt will stay relatively seated when you back off the 3/4" headed bolt..Another thing to ponder is there a bad roll pin inside the clutch housing on the vertical HLR adjuster stud and nut ?? If you turn down that clutch housing adjustment too far it will cause the pedal to lower as you tighten the nut..Back off that adjustment till the pedal contacts the pedal stop and check the pressure..If it's better now , back it off till the pressure starts to go down..Now turn it clockwise and watch the pressure go to maximum. Keep turning it till it starts to drop slightly. Did the pedal come off it's stop?? If so , something's not kosher in the adjustment linkages...Sorry , Best I can do over the net..
