JD 350 reverser question

Just bought a 350b with stuck steering clutches, tore all apart and repaired, now when operating, on occasion the reverser will shift to forward wonderfully, but reverse will shift slowly, and then engage abruptly. does not happen every time, mostly when in 3rd gear and under a load such as backblading. i would think that any pressure adjustments would affect both forward and reverse. the clutch pedal is fully releasing. the service manual does not specify any adjustment for the shifter mechanism, and the holes for the shifter detent ball are worn, but it still clicks into gear. any suggestions on what to check would be greatly appreciated.

Without going into a long story about all the possible problems and fixes - many of those reversers worked like that since the day they were new. With some, adusting the accumlator stroke-length helped with the reverse shift. That was especially true with the 350Cs and newer since they ran at higher pressure.
The forward shift is NOT exactly the same as reverse. Wear of certain parts over time can make reverse seem to hang up before engaging - but so can many other things. If you want the reverser and the isolator assembly to last as long as possible - I'd adjust it so it shifts comfortably at full-throttle 2nd gear - and baby it for any higher gears. 350Bs and 350Cs are prone to isolator breakage - and that will result faster the more you do quick, high-throttle shifts from forward to reverse. The first 350s did not have the same separate-spring isolator and held up much better, and it was eliminated with the 350D. Check your clutch and lube pressure - and if OK, I suggest leaving things alone and shift it conseratively - e.g. throttle down if necessary.
