Finally got the machine back together after following Roy's advice to get the clutch pedal freeplay set correctly. After pulling the motor and inspecting the clutch housing, discovered previous owner had double nutted the vertical HLR adjusting rod, therefore the adjusting arm was too low to let the clutch pedal come back to the stop. I repaired that, changed all fluids and filters, got everything adjusted correctly, and put it back together. Machine shifts good now for about an hour. When it gets warm, reverse will slip pretty severely when backing out of a hole. It pushes good in low, fair in high, and will barely move in reverse until I get on level ground. I put a gauge back on it when warm and slippiing and the pressures appear to be good: R180psi H160psi L185psi. I assume it's time to replace clutch packs. Am I on the right track? Any advice would be greatly apprecieated. Thanks!

Greg

Pull the top cover off the transmission..Try to flick the clutches back and forth in the slots visible in the clutch drums..Clutches that have a little of slop in those slots are probably OK ..The ones that seem tight are probably burnt and warped...How about engine speeds in all ranges..Is the engine rpm the same in all ranges or is there a difference between one range over another..Does one range pull down a little more than others?? You will notice a pulldown immediately after shifting directions but , it should even out to the same rpm as the other range in a few seconds..Another part of the driveline that could slip under load is steering clutches..Thats a little harder to check..Let us know..If I can't pull the rabbit out of the hat , maybe someone else can....

Thanks for your reply Roy. I will try to check the clutches this weekend. I am also in the the midst of getting equipment ready for corn planting. Going to get real busy soon! As far as engine speeds go, the engine recovers about equally in all ranges as near as I can tell by ear. The tach doesn't work. When in reverse and warm, if I let it slip for a bit, it will engage solidly and then work fine until I shift back to reverse again. I'm nervous to let it slip for too long and the time slipping before solid engagement gets a little longer the longer I run it. I've noticed if I "drop" the boom a little bit while it's slipping it will engage solidly most of the time (but not always). I realize this is a totally separate hydraulic system, but this is what I've noticed. If the problem was with the steering clutches, wouldn't it slip in forward ranges as well? It pushes very well in low range second gear all the time. High range is a little bit weaker but I attribute that to the lower pressure in the high range pressure test. Thank you very much for your replies Roy, this forum is great!!
