my tranny fluid goes low after a while too...its a slow slow slow leak...i let it sit over the winter. I took it out to stretch her legs for a bit and I went up a small incline and I just about crested the top the transmission just stopped. The levers/shifters were in the gear but the machine wasn't. Topped off the tranny and she's running fine again. I'll be keeping an eye on that though because when something goes wrong next i have a feeling it will be something similiar

I believe the hoses were omitted in the late model 450C's... but anyway... to remove them , you have to remove the top covers on the steering clutch housings. That involves removing the fuel tank- hydraulic tank- and battery box as an assembly. Then removing the steering clutch housing covers and removing the small return lines. Just leave the port open between the steering clutch housing and transmission case. Something is leaking excessively in there so you are only going to be performing a temporary patch .. Might as well bite the bullet and spend the few more hours to take the sprockets off and remove the clutches and reseal them. Its not the type of job you'll enjoy doing twice

Thanks Jonathan for the advice, looking forward to doing the job from top down, to get me by, also: Don't know if this means anything, but when I pull the fill caps for the stearing clutches, and blow put an air fitting in it, air flows freely to the transmission fill cap. any comments???

The hoses may already be omitted if you say its a later model "C".. The clutches may be leaking so much that the oil can't return to the transmission fast enough. if I remember correctly , the return ports are small...maybe in the 1/8 pipe size area... what exactly is the problem you're experiencing?

I fill the transmission, and run it for a little while, and all the fluid is gone. Not leaking anywhere, just not returning to the transmission, even letting it sit overnight, nothing on the dip stick. Probably going to tear into it this weekend, all the way. Thanks again for the info, very helpfull.
