I've been looking for a used dozer for my farm, I'd like to get a JD,CAT or Case(ie 350b-c) but its like finding a needle in hay stack for a decent machine for $10,12-k. I don't know anything about some of the foreign machines, they seem to be more available and cheaper(I assume there is a reason), can anyone give me some advise/ideas? Are there any of them worth looking at or to stay away from? Thanks Steve

Over here (Eau Claire, WI) there is a company that sells used heavy equipment parts. Fairly often they have some of the smaller machines out front with a For Sale sign. Might want to give a call....

Then again, after you get a machine, they would be a source for parts.

I have no connection to them, just live about 5 miles away.

You didn't mention the size you think you need. No U.S. company makes a small crawler anymore - in the size range of the Deere 350, Allis HD4, Case 350, International 500, etc. Deere started a "Certified Relife" program to fill the void - since many government-funded programs require small US built crawlers. Deere would buy back older 350s and 450s, completely update and rebuild them, and then put new serial number tags on them. As I recall, the price tag for a "Relife" Deere 350 is around $60,000 on top of the crawler you "trade in." Availability of farm-crawlers is probably a regional thing. In my area of central New York - dairy farm country - the number one large farm crawler was either the Cat D4 or Allis HD5. They are both great machines and still can be bought relatively cheap - often in the $5000 price-range.
I prefer the Allis Chalmers because the parts are mostly generic - a lot of truck parts with a Detroit Diesel engine. Cheap and easy to work on.
Both the Cat and Allis have hand-clutches. Small farm crawlers were often Allis H3/H4 or HD3/HD4, Deere 420-440, or International T5/500s. Still many of them around also, but the small crawlers tend to sell for a lot more money when in good shape. For a powerful, cheap and easy to work on crawler, my vote is for the AC HD5.

I recently a D8K for on our farm, nothing stands in that old hogs way, we have about 1000 acres of large pine and ash trees to deal with in the next few years, so thats why I bought something that large. only paid 23,500 canadian for it. Old logging machine. Decent undercarriage. It had sat for 8 years before i bought it and everything was pretty tight on it, nothing a few weeks in my shop and few thousand dollars in new hoses and stuff like that didn"t take care of though. Been running strong now for over 800 hours without a problem.

Thanks guys for the input. I'll keep looking! Maybe I just don't know what I'm looking for? I live in the Minneapolis/St Paul area(not alot of dozers running around) I'm ok going a few hundred miles to get one if it comes along.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated:):):)

I would definitely stay away from any foreign
made machine, initial cost seems more reasonable,
however any parts, service is usually a long time
wait or none existence, for your $10-12-K,I would think it would not be a problem finding what you want,[at least not in my area]

Grandpa there are foreign machines that are of high quality and parts are readily available.(Komatsu being just one) Plus, in some cases even domestic manufacturers like Cat are simply rebranding foreign machines as their own stuff.

Steve you should be able to find a decent Case or Deere 350 or 450 in your price range. You'd be really hard pressed to find good Cat at that price, unless you go for a real old one like a 933. I'm like dlpost, I have an old IH and it's been great. You can score a good one much bigger than a 450 class machine for roughly half your budget.

I think all Cat machines under the D5 are made in Japan as well as the US. Caterpillar Mitsubishi has been a partnership for many many years. Most parts are interchangable. Dave
