I have an old JCB 3c mk3 1979 the hydraulics are very low, whenever I try to put more hydraulic fluid in, it goes in very slowly but then starts overflowing thorugh the breather caps. Once I start the engine it all comes gushing out of them, like 20 foot in the air. Does anyone know what the problem could be.

jack the machine up on the left hand stabliser so the hydraulic tank filler is as high up as possible. you then need to undo the large nut on the side of the filter housing, there is a spring behind it but it is'nt under a great deal of pressure. remove the spring and screw the nut back on loose. this allows the oil filter by-pass valve to lift off it's seat. joe bamford might have been clever but had a fuuny sense of humour, the intentiom ws to ensure any oil entering the system was filtered. dont forget to put the spring back when you have finished!

The oil has to go through the hydraulic filter when you are putting it in,to be able to pour it straight in you need to remove the spring behind the bypass valve, the filler is a plug on top of a short piece of hose,at the bottom of the hose on the top of the filter facing you there is another plug of the same size which I think is 2 1/4",take that plug out and the spring behind it,put the plug back on its own finger tight, with the filler plug in place start and stop the engine, the oil will have pushed the valve off its seat and now the oil will now flow straight into the tank, when full put the spring back and tighten up the plug,do not start the engine with either of the plugs out cos it will pump the oil out.

I have removed the large bolt and spring and a plunger thing came towards me but the oil still came out of the breather caps on the front. Could it be the suction strainer blocked or is it something else.

It sounds to me as if it is over filled, have you checked the sight guage, there is a suction filter in the hydraulic tank and it maybe blocked, you have to drain the oil, under the tank you will find a square plate, remove the plate and inside you will find a washable strainer, take it out and wash it,the main hydraulic filter in the canister also need to be changed every 500hrs.
Good luck

The reason I think that it is low on hydraulic oil is that I can"t see the oil guage very well and it looks like there isn"t any in there at all, and also it has been leaking hydraulic oil from the steering ram for a long time, but I have just replaced that, it does make a whining noise when hydraulics are used as well. I will try and clean the suction filter and see what happens.

Like I said above you may have a blocked strainer,if I remember correctly the sight guage had two marks on it,the oil should not be lower than the bottom mark or higher than the top,the hydraulic reservoir is part of the loader frame, for the oil to come out the breather that is in front of the windscreen if I remember righ it has to be too high in the reservoir, the pump screaming can be caused by the strainer if its blocked, clean the strainer and when you refill the oil watch the sight tube so you get it to the correct level.
Good Luck
