Greetings, crawler owners. I am interested in purchasing a used crawler to restore, but I need some help. I know what to check for with engines, i.e. smoke, low power, oil pressure. However, it appears that crawlers are much different from other machinery. What should I look for or pay attention to when assessing a used crawler?

Jack, like GlennL , these are the things to look for when looking at a crawler . You also want to look at the final drive housings to make sure they are not wore thin ,cracked or have bolts or metal welded up or leaking from such repairs . The other things you might look for is cracks in the main frame on IHC TD9s the tranmission housing is the main frame of the crawler ,the other thing is to jack up the rear of the crawler and check for wear in the final drives with a large pry by placing it betwean the rear houseing and the track to see how much movement you have also under the track lay board down and do the samething.

I've been looking at a TD-6. The owner claims there's a crack in the rear-end oil pan. Could this be a major problem like you cited for the TD-9? I haven't been underneath to look yet. Thanks! Joe Fabregas ny

The two previous posts are correct in identifying the undercarriage as the place to look for wear. I'll try to point out what exactly you should look for. 1. Sprocket wear: the teeth should not be worn to a point. 2. Track pins and bushings: wear here results in track "stretching", and can be roughly determined by the amount of adjustment left on the front idler. Be sure to count the links, as a "quick fix" when you run out of adjustment is to remove one link and start over. The pins and bushings can be turned once to give a new wear surface. Check for wear on the back side of the bushing to see if this has already been done.
3. Rollers: check for wear in the bushings by jacking the machine and checking for play. Examine the flanges to see that they are all present and not worn too thin. If the flanges have been hitting the track pin bosses, it will indicate either severly worn roller faces, or worn track rails, or both.
4. Track frame: look at the machine from the front, to see if the tracks appear vertical. If they are tilted in at the top, it indicates worn track frame pivot bushings, or worse, twisted frames.

The other feature on crawlers not found on wheel tractors are the steering clutches (unless you are looking at a Cletrac or Oliver, which used differential brake steering). These are costly and difficult to repair, so you may wish to avoid any machine that does not steer properly.

Good luck. If you have any specific quetions, let me know and I'll try to help.

Undercarriage, its the most expensive part and the highest wear.
