cat 953 track adjustment

Hello, a relative of mine has a 1985 cat 953 doser/loader and we are trying to get the right track adjusted. I have an older doser that uses a nut but I have read the newer ones use a grease fitting. So, we removed the top cover plate and I see a bunch of grease so I am guessing I am on the right path. The problem is that the adjuster bar/arm is no longer straight it it is now running at a downward angle to the front (wheel?) almost appearing as it is bent. What I thing needs done is the pressure released, push the arm back up, and refill with grease. I am thinking the track go enough slack in it at one point to allow the arm/rod to fall downward.

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks Guys, I will try the easy method first...pump in grease and see what happens.

As for the other side, it is nice and straight.

If I do need to do anything to the adjuster, do I just take the bolt out on top by the grease fitting or is there a pressure relief valve someplace? I don"t want to take the bolt out and have things start flying like the compressed spring and grease.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike, the Big Dangerous spring is held in place by two big pins that you will see when you take the cover off. Shine a light down in there and see that one of them isn't broken. Also look for any build up of mud around the spring. Have seen the under part of frame get broken and it fill up all around the spring. That job was a real challenge.

Mike, there may be a problem there like the recoil spring housing full of mud. If so the rod will break. The correct adjustment in to pump it out untill the track is tight and back off 3/8" to 1/2". If the rod is bent as you say I think you have a problem so keep an eye on it.

Yes that is where you adjust the tracks.
Also the tracks might be worn out thus pushing the rod back up will just fall back down. You might have to pull that whole adjuster out and put new bushings in it also to keep the rod straight. the idler which is the large front wheel may need to be put into the high wear spot which involves takeing the track guides loose and miving them to the next holes.

I think some machines like the 953 are like that. Look at the other side. Cat makes pretty strong track frames and adjusters. If there is a bunch of grease there, check if the release fitting or grease fitting might be loose. Also make sure the grease fitting isn't plugged. That could explain grease as well. Try pumping grease in and see what happens. Hope this helps. Dave
