I am installing the axle shaft in the final drive of a allis chalmers HD-4, but when I get to putting the external snap ring on the splined shaft on the inside of the bull gear there isn't room to get snap ring pliers , screw drivers or anything else up in the space. Am I missing something? Is there a special tool? I have tried for hours and I can't get it. Please Help Paul

Position the pin of the snap ring on top of the collar at the outside edge of the hole. When the center detent hole in the axle is about where it needs to be, take a small screwdriver and push the pin into the hole. Then make sure to wiggle the axle a little to make sure the pin snaps into the detent.

They can be a real pain the first time, after that, it gets pretty easy.

Can you install the snap ring over a piece of pipe either slight larger in diameter of the axle shaft or the same size and then slide the ring on over? actually that might not work because the snap ring might get snagged in the joint..... .BUT..if you slide the snap ring over one side at a time it might work. Just a thought. Sorry I can't be of better help.
