Can anyone tell me how far the adjustment cylinder for the tracks on this dozer will extend (in inches)before it stops with no more adjustment?

I can't tell you in inches exactly but there are two keys in the side of the track frame that ride in the slots of the idler tube inside the frame. They will hit the end before the cyl comes apart. What is happening with yours? Can you adjust it or will it not move?

The cylinder will go back in but will not extend allowing for more adjustment. It is only approx 5" extended and it seems to me that it should allow for more.

If the cyl will go out to 5" and stop and you feel lots of resistance to pumping more grease in then maybe you are fully extended. The sleeve on the tube behind the idler isn't very long and it must stay inside of the big seal on the front of the track frame. Sorry I don't know the exact dimension it will extend to. The tube inside that holds the recoil spring has a pair of nut locks that also come against the keys that guide the tube as you extend it. If the end of the tube is near as far forward as the round piece on the side of the frame that is it. The round piece is the outer end of the key I mention.

Usually the side wear plates or where the front idler wheel is hung off the rails, is at the end of the rails your pretty much done for for stretch. ON my case, the tensioning units or cylinders were all wore out after being maxxed out for so long that one day one side spit out all the grease and I lost ALL tension.
