I recently finished servicing my Case 450 Crawler Loader. Every filter replaced (man was it tough getting the one hycraulic filter cap off!!) and I had a new muffler put on (the stock one rotted away) and a new exhaust manifold gasket.
I went to my local Case dealer to buy all the filters, a little pricey but I can handle it, and then I requested a new muffler. The parts kid (no kidding, couldn't have been a day older then 20 and NO experience in the equipment field AT ALL) then found the muffler after a 25 minute search and tells me its $650.00!! I couldnt believe it, I asked him to double check and he said thats what it was. I then asked for another parts guy to double check and he looked on his computer and it came back the same. Well, not willing to pay that kind of money for an exhaust, I went to the local Canadian Tire store and found an $80.00 dollar muffler on sale for $40.00 and I bought a $1.99 adapter to neck down the manifold to muffler size (the muffler hole and the manifold hole were exactly the same size) and put it on. Now she purrs like a kitten and man is she ever quiet! I couldn't believe the difference. The undercarriage turning is the loudest thing you hear when you run her and I couldn't be happier!!
The ONLY thing left to do to this machine besides brakes (which I wont do and never use anyways) is the electrical system. Sorry for the long post but am so pleased with myself I had to share! lol! Have a good day everyone!

I learned early to ask what the price is for every part I buy. I also keep an old John Deere model 50 tractor running. Fortunately there is a John Deere parts page available with the suggested price, which is what the dealer sells it for.

I was fortunate enough to have met an older Case parts man from Canada online. I bought a full set of manuals from him. There is a "pancake" muffler that fits the 450 under the hood that is something like $50-$60. Just bought some 2" pipe and I was in business.

Since the exhaust pipe on my machine is straight I put a "flapper" pipe cover on top. I end up pulling it off cause it bounces and rattles so much that its annoying. Only put it on at the end of the day.

Hey Case450, I feel your pain! This past winter I got a price of $1400.00 for a radiator(from the Case Dealer) for my Case 350 dozer! The dealer's recommended Rad. Shop was $500.00, and I shopped around and got the radiator re-cored for $265.00!

Hey CASE450. I also priced my muffler with my dealer and got about the same price. The muffler you were given a price on was a horizontal muffler. The one I recommended the other day was a vertical, which is also offered for the 450 if the parts man would have looked in the right place. The price of this muffler is around $60-$70. It will bolt right on to your manifold. Anyway, I'm glad you got her fixed. Drive it like you stole it.(Just remember, if it breaks you have to fix it.)

If you were out there working on equipment every day like I am you'd eventually loose the "sticker shock" over parts prices. Typical price markups seem to be in the neighborhood of 100% to 300%, sometimes less but often times alot more. I've got a machine right now with a boom level indicator in the cab that consists of two meters, two small circuit boards with maybe $25 worth of components on each, a $2 switch and a LED light, all housed in a metal box maybe 4x6x4....asking price from the OEM is nearly $3000 and it's a propriatory part available nowhere else. Hopefully the parts I bought today for $5 and replaced on the circuit board will solve the problem it's having otherwise I'll just have to replace it with a different setup that I can get for less than $500.....The thing nowdays is that the OEM's know time is money and they're gonna make sure they get their cut any way they can. If a man's machine is down for 2 hours, at 500 an hour, over a part actually worth $5 they they know that man will gladdly spend $100++++ to get the part and get his machine back in operationn ASAP before he loses more money with the machine down. Basically they've got the customer by the short-n-curlies and they know it.....

When I sold Ford New Holland years ago , a customer caught the little piece of abs plastic over the windshield wipers on a limb..That piece of black abs plastic cost $ 600.00.....I was floored...I had the parts guy call and confirm the price...I got on the phone and complained to whoever would listen...Finally got the price down to around $ 200.00....Not bad for a 14 ounce piece of plastic.....

I used to call the dealer, price the part, have my little rant, then go and find a generic replacement. Now that I'm older, hopefully wiser, and like to avoid getting myself "consternated", I don't even call the dealer until I have exhausted all hope of finding a generic, finding something used, searching the internet, repairing what I've got, or making a new one myself. I have Olivers and I don't even know where my nearest AGCO dealer is anymore, its been so long since I've bought anything from them. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction to be able to avoid coyotes of all types.

I just priced glow plugs for my JD 2010c.
JD wants $93 EACH.
The manufacturer of them sells to dealers at $17.50 each with a msrp of $29.
Found them on eBay for $25 each.
Glow plugs for my 1 ton chevy were only $8 each.

I did the same thing for my 480D Case backhoe. It is amazing how much money can be saved by using common sense! For another example, you mentioned brakes, My brakes are of the disc type and are designed for dry use. I had no brakes at all and upon inspection, I found a bad seal and the housing was almost full of oil. I removed the disc and soaked them in gasoline for about four hours, blew them dry and discovered some dark spots still present. I soaked them over-night, blew them off again and they looked like new. Lightly sanded them, replaced the bad seal and they now work as good as can be expected. I am 62 years old and I have done things like this all my life. Just makes you feel good.
