I need a little help.. I am a CAT maechanic, I do a little work on other things when I have to. Problem I am working on a FORD bi-directional tractor, 276, vintage 1988. It has a Cumings 4BT 3.9 Diesel engine. It acts as if it is out of fuel. An electric fuel pump has been added. It has not helped. it will run about 3 minutes at a time then the fuel flow stops.

What type of injector pump does it have, both Bosch and CAV rotary pumps were used, have you checked that the power is continuous to the stop run switch,it must have power to hold it in the run position, that being well and if you have a Bosch pump, remove the banjo bolt from the return line, there is a small orifice in the bolt to act as a self bleed, make sure that its not blocked or the leak return pipe blocked, inside both make of pump there is a transfer pump,ie when that pump is fitted to vehicles it usually will not have a priming pump or mechanical lift pump, the pumps are capable of lifting the fuel from the tank without a lift pump,so if you were to remove the feed pipe from the pump and put your finger over the hole you should be able to feel the suction when the engine is spun over on the starter,if the pump is full of air each time it stops there is two sources where it can be coming from, one is from the suction side of the pump, the other is back through a sticking injector nozzle which can let compression leak back, get some clear fuel pipe and put a length in between the injector pump feed and the supply line,if its drawing air between the pump and the tank you will see the air bubbles in the line,no bubbles check on the injectors.

Since you are a mechanic I'm sure you have checked the fuel tank for a restriction. Also, I have seen things get trapped in the banjo fittings around the fuel filters. What about the tank vent. Is it possible the vent is plugged and pulling a vacume on the tank? Is the return line pinched or closed off anywhere? Just a few things off the top of my head.
