Hello,

I have a JD350 Wide track that powers out on steep grades, it has a 3 cylinder diesel that seems to run fine. All filters have been changed, the transmission filter looked pretty dirty, but had no effect on the perfomance.

Since it does the same in forward and reverse, neighbor stopped by and told me to change the injectors, which I did, the old ones were shot. Less smoke, but still powers out. Then the bottom radiator hose blew... bad luck in Illinois. I guess I need to do a compression check, and probably change the small fuel transfer pump.

Thanks for your help guys its appreciated. Columns got a lot of good info in it.

Does it perform the same in both forward and reverse? You may have the reverse clutch pack not fully releasing.

A 350c should have a fuel transfer pump..not gravity feed... Are you saying the engine runs ok ,, just looses drive power going up a slope?? If thats the case , I'd think that the reverser isnt full enough and is sucking air in that position... Youre checking the front dipstick correct?? Theres one for the gearbox transmission near your heel and one a little forward for the reverser.

I changed the power reverser fluid, and filter, filled it up to the line with jd hydraulic oil. front dipstick.

Drained the oil at the final drives and refilled to the line. Rear dipstick.

On flat ground it doesn't have power to drive itself in 4th gear. In 3rd it lugs the engine down to 1500 rpm's. Is this the powershift going out? I've heard you can check the pressure on this but where do I install the pressure gauge line?

As I said previously, the 350C will indeed gravity feed when on flat ground with a full fuel tank. Subsequently, if the fuel transfer-pump that is attached to the side of the engine - has gone bad - the crawler may run well on flat land -but starve for fuel when pointing up-hill. I was a Deere mechanic since the 350 was invented (and before), and we had a fleet of over twenty 350 crawler rental machines. I've seen this happen many times to 350s and 450s. Your crawler has two fuel tranfer pumps - one that is bolted to the side of the engine, and a second one built into the back of the fuel injection pump. The second one - that is built into the injection pump can draw fuel to itself - but not very well on steep slopes. In regard to your reverser sucking air? Never heard of such a thing myself. Keep in mind that in a 350C, the reverser powers your steering clutches. If reverer pressure gets low, your steering clutches will slip before the reverser does and most likely get quickly ruined. In regard to your crawler bogging down in 3RD and 4TH? Those are pretty useless gears anyway - 1st and 2nd are usually the only ones that get used for pushing dirt. You should be able to push a full blade of dirt in 2nd with bogging down if all is right. I'm still not clear if your engine is low on power all the time, or just low on hills - or - something slipping? Big difference. If something is slipping, the RPMs stay up but the machine slows down. Pretty easy to tell - for you that is. Not for anyone else though, who are not there to hear and see.

There should be a pipe plug on the reverser control valve just above where the F/R shifter arm comes out the side of the valve. The pressure should be the same in forward and reverse.. about 120psi I believe (give or take) If it works ok in reverse, but not in forward or vice versa, I'd guess that the reverser needs to be rebuilt.

Have you checked the fuel pump? 350C with a full tank on flat ground gets gravity feed fuel from the tank, but not up hills. The injection pump has its own fuel pump built into it, but it's not enough to suck fuel from the tank when pointing uphill.
