Can't Keep It Up !

The front of my Case Backhoe that is. I have a 480D Case Backhoe and when I am digging with the backhoe, the front bucket bleeds down. I can have it up all the way and when I strain the rear bucket the front comes down--slowely with engine in strain. I have to constantly get it back up. The stablizers stay up. I have rebuilt all the cylinders on the machine because of external leaks. The front bucket was not leaking and will still lift what it is supposed to and will hold it. Another thing is that the float position on the loader will not work. When engaged the front end will lift. Any ideas on what to check would be appreciated.

Got to agree with AJK, remove the end covers from the spool and make sure the detent mechanism for the spool isn't damaged or coming apart. Typically a detent mechanism has an adjustment to it so it may not even be broken, it may just be out of adjustment. My question though is why are you digging with the bucket in the air? I've been around, worked on, and occasionally operated construction equipment most of my life and have never seen anyone operating a backhoe with the bucket in the air unless there was a clearance issue. Keeping it close to the ground or better yet using it to jack the front tires off the ground slightly always seems to make the machine alot more stable.

NC Wayne--Please read my post again. When I said "can't keep it up" I am referring to the front end of the machine. I don't know a lot about backhoe operation but I know the front bucket adds extra stability. That is why I have to constantly lift the front back up. Thanks to all for the responses. I now have an idea about what to check.

"when I am digging with the backhoe, the front bucket bleeds down." Sorry I misunderstood but the way it was phrased led me to believe the bucket was actually bleeding down instead of not supporting the front of the machine up in the air. If the bucket won't support the machine that could just as easily be the packing in one or both cylinders as it could be internal leakage in the valve body. As for the float position, again, I'd check the adjustment on the detent mechanism and make sure the spool is stopping in the right place. In shifting the spool to detent position you go right through the boom down position and if the spool, for whatever reason stops short then the boom is gonna try to keep going down and lift the machine instead of floating.

Thanks, I will check the detent adjustment. The reason I mentioned the float position is because maby the two problems are related. I can load the front bucket with a full load of wet dirt and it will stay up, only bleeds down over a few hours. I can say the same thing while lifting the front of the machine. I think this is normal with the type packing used in these machines. They do not have lip seals, as you know, and will eventually bleed down. I like the idea of maybe going through the detent which sounds like what it is doing. Again, with the front of the machine in the air, when the rear bucket is in a strain, you can see the front of the machine going down. I do not understand this problem. I think I have valve problems.

It maybe worth while to remove the bottom cap from the spool valve for the bucket up/down,if the retaining bolt that holds the spring to the valve has come loose it would not hold the spool properly in the hold position and also would not allow the spool to be pushed down to the float position, make sure when working on hydraulics on anything that the engine is stopped, all equipment is on the ground and that you wobble all the levers about to relieve any pressure in the system, the other things that can cause a problem is the cylinder seals, port valve out of adjustment, stuck open or bad seat, main spool valve or block scored and not holding the pressure but since you are having trouble with the froat I would look at the spool valve first, the cap on the bottom holds the valve in place, remove the cap and check the spring retaining bolt for tightness, watch for oil spillage.

My Case has square o-rings; if they go in and twist slightly, there will be a bleed-by. Or that float valve needs new inner seals and rings?

You probably have an internal leak in the control valve.
