I am putting some new hoses on a hydraulic excavator with pipe fittings and wanted to know if teflon tape is ok? I have some loctite with teflon that I have used on diesel fuel fittings. So, what say you? If no, why not? Thanks in advance.
Tom

read this thread a couple times now i having night mares about all the hy line i use tape on fitting pump and such over last 30 years and never realized i was going to mass them up with thread tape. guys hy systems ar not that easy to damage now maybe on a 747 jet but on a pice of equipment i dont think so. i bet you could throw the whole roll in never caues much problem. i seen alot worese come out a working hy systems then a littl pic of thread tape. so here my though ues the tread tape it wont hurt your hy system. you probley should save whats left on the roll for a later date wouldn"t through it in hy system. but probley would do much damage

A no no on that tape use a liquid type. And if you really get a hard one to seal up from buggered up threads or something I used JB Weld once and it saved the day.

Do not use tape on hydraulic fittings peroid. Use the paste teflon. The tape can get into your hydraulic system and cause several nasty problems.

I prefer the paste type teflon pipe dope. As traper said, always avoid putting sealant on the first couple of threads of any fitting.

If you do choose to use teflon tape, always wrap it opposite the direction that the threads turn. This will prevent the tape from balling up when the fitting is installed.

And always TEAR the tape off when finished wrapping. NEVER cut the tape, as a cut edge will provide a leak path for the fluid.

NEVER use any type of sealant on an "O" ring. Those fittings are designed to seat an "O" ring directly to the metal. Adding a sealant will just provide a leak path later.
The same applies for tapered seat fittings. These are designed to seal metal to metal. A sealant or tape will just prevent the fitting to retain it's proper torque, and will loosen over time.

Remember in tapered pipe treads, a little sealant is good, a lot is worse than no sealant.

Britt

Do the fittings have small chamfers on the inside of the male pipe fitting and small chamfers outside the stationary part inside the swivel nut??..If so , tape is wasted and useless..Most hydraulic fittings seal on these chamfers and not on the threads..I've seen it time and time again on hydraulic fittings..If you're going from a pipe thread flange to a pipe male fitting , then seal it up..I usually use a paste teflon pipe sealant when dealing with hydraulic fittings of this type..

The main purpose of any pipe sealent or tape is to libricate the threads. I have used motor oil and never-seize on hundreds of high pressure fittings without a failure. Of course I use pipe sealent or tape on water.
