There were some about when I lived in England, not that far from the factory that made them, one machine, a 2B was used to dig the footings for my garage, and I have done repairs on others. With only the 40 odd horsepower of the 3/42 Nuffield skid unit to pull them along they were very under powered, the increase in power came when the Nuffield 3/45 tractor came out, so it was only another 3hp, the backactor removal/refit did not look like a job you could do in 5 minutes either, the machine had the normal nuffield hydraulics left in, but you had to remove/refit all the 3 point linkage when taking the backactor on and off. In fact the trators 3 point was an option priced at an extra 8 pounds in 1968 bringing the list price to 3,260 pounds. The 2D was simply a 2B with the 4 cylinder 70hp engine in it. When used as a tractor you were left with a small Nuffield, with the agility of somthing 10 times the size, and very poor visability for a tractor of that power. You have to remember that one of the main reasons that the Nuffield did not sell as well as its main competitors, the Massey-Ferguson 35 and the Fordson Dexta was because of its bulk, as they were only a 4 cylinder Nuffield with a cylinder taken off and 28" tyres put on, they were just not as handy as the rivals from Ford and M-F. J.C.Bamfords success story is with out doubt the '3' range of Backhoe-loaders, first powered by Fordson Major, then Nuffield/Leyland, then Perkins and now by thier own 444 engine.
