Hi all. I am looking at a 310a today. Would like to give it a good going over. I've got a JD 350B dozer, but never owned a full sized Deere Backhoe. Couple of quick questions. How do I find the reverser pressure test fiting for my guage? Roy, I noted one of your prior posts: "Put a guage in the reverser control valve..rear cover , plug facing down..Should read approx. 135 lbs..1/2 throttle , gearshift in neutral , moving reverser lever forward and backward...With reverser lever in forward , run the engine speed to idle speed , then run it to wide open throttle, Does the oil pressure fluxuate widely??" Roy or anyone else, where exactly is the rear cover? And what tool whould I need to remove the plug? Similarly, where would I hook my guage in to test the motor's oil pressure? Finally, any other advice on items to check would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all.
Joel

The reverser control valve is on the right side of the transmission casting .If you get under the machine you will find the control valve..The body of the reverser control valve is made up of aluminum castings..You will find 2 cooler lines going directly into the front of the valve..On the opposite end is a back to the control valve..The test port is a plug that is drilled straight up ..Take out the plug and insert an o-ring fitting adapted to a gauge.. To test for engine oil pressure , above the starter on the rear engine plate you will find an oil sending unit..Screw a gauge in there.. Now the important stuff....Jack up the machine with the stabilizers , and push hard on the outside of the tires..If you can get some noticable axle play in and out , the axle bearings are shot[ final drives have to come off and be rebuilt].. Look into the radiator for oil seepage in the coolant....oil cooler is probably leaking.. Check for gray color in the engine crankcase oil..Indicates liners leaking coolant into crankcase. Needs engine rebuilt..You might take a wrench to check for antifreeze at the bottom of the oil pan..There will be fresh coolant at the bottom drain plug.. Check to see if you can steer the machine while raising the loader..If not ,Indicates if there's a problem with pressure control valve adjustment or orifice stuck in valve spool bore.. There that should keep you out of trouble for a while.....Good Luck

Hey Roy, figured I'd hear from you. Obviously your not just a crawler guy. I drove an hour to see the machine, I pulled up, got out of my truck and as I walked up to the machine I saw a can of either on the seat, with hand written starting directions left for me from the owner that included "spray a stream of either into the intake before starting". I thought about the fact that every time this machine has been started for how ever long has been with a shot of either. I got into my truck, drove an hour home and got my wife flowers for mother's day and called it a day. I really appreciate the advice which I'll use going forward. I had thought of the collant and oil, but not the others, your help continues to be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Joel
