Dad has a Komatsuu PC60 - 5, long stick, wide pads exellent machine - but watch the final drives. Most final drives on these small machines are made by Hy-Dash $13000.00 - $15000.00 a side (if you can find one -they may be down in price now but check into it)

I have a Hitaci EX60-1. Short stick, reg tracks, blade. Final drives on Hitachi are better that Hy-Dash. This machine will outlift the Komatsu but the Komatsu reaches about 3' - 4' further. The blade can be a problem - if you use it for light gradeing and stablization its OK. If you try to make the machine into a dozer you will need to eventually replace the final drives.

Both are grey machines - more than likly most small machines are grey unless you can verify the they were made for purchase locally. You can usually tell by all the Japanes decals.

I have never had problems getting parts for either. I would stick with an even number as they are more common ie. EX 60, 80, 100, 120 ect. Newer series like the -5 will have electric over hydrolic joy stick controls. Older series, -1, are hydrolic joy stick. With Hitachi the -2 and -3 had issues with their controlls. I don't know about the other brands.

Don't believe the hours. Pay someone to inspect it if you don't know what to look for.

Excavators are one the most useful pieces of equipment on my farm.

We have had good luck with our PC60-7, which now has about 4800 hours on it. Our local dealer (East PBE in CT) does a good job with parts and support. OEM rubber tracks are a bit pricey, but we found a Bridgestone rubber track dealer whose price was a lot more reasonable for the same track.

Good unit, we would buy Komatsu again.

They are all good when they aren't broken down... But.. you may want to check with local dealers about parts availability for certain machines. Some foreign machines are imported here and were never intended to be here -- in the US ("Gray-market machines" ) ... so parts availability and technical info availability on some may be difficult. I've also seen some extremely crazy prices for Kobelco parts..$2500 track idlers... $1500 hydraulic tubes... and a track pitch on some that dont match up to anything but that specific machine.

How do i know if the machine is gray market or not?

What should i check when inspecting the machine. I'm going to an auction.
