Cat D3 or D3B???

I picked up a dozer that's marked D3B on the side, but the serial number doesn't appear to be where the Cat dealer says it should be (rear left on the frame). I would like to order an owners manual for it, but want to be sure I get the right one!

Where should I look for the serial number? Also, how can I tell whether it's a D3 or a D3B?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

D3 has single reverse,... D3B has 3 speeds reverse.

The D3 (79U model)serial number locations are R.H side of the cylinder block, R.H. side of the firewall in the operators compartment and on top of the bevel gear case under the seat. I would assume other models would have the same locations.

Must be a D3, the peddals come up out of the floor (Thanks Bob). Any idea where the serial number would be?

SteveGr:
No luck on the ser above the peddals. No plate and no numbers stamped in the metal that I can see.

Thanks to all for the responses!

It has been a few years but I beleive that the serial number plate was also located just above the foot pedals. If the plate is missing look for numbers stamped in. This also should be the serial number

The serial number will tell you if it's a D3 or D3B. Just give your Cat dealer a call. D3B's start with a 23Y, 24Y, 27Y and 28Y I believe. I could be off a number. Another thing to look at is the roll bar. D3's only have a 2 post ROPS and D3B's have a 4 post. Later D3B's have 37 link tracks instead of 36 link. Dave

Thanks for the response Dave, but one of the problems I have is finding the ser number. Any suggestions on where to look? I assume it would be somewhere on the frame, but I just haven"t found it yet...
