The 188 in my Case 450 needs a rebuild. I believe it has a bad cylinder. Does any one have an estimate of what it will cost to rebuild the cylinder head? Also, how much to have the crankshaft turned?I've got a close guess on the rest of the parts. Any tips for things you would do while having the engine apart.

A ballpark for the cylinder head would be between $200 and $650. It will depend on how worn out it is.If the guides need replacing as well as the exhaust valve seats and valves, then you will be on the high side of the estimate. The last few I have done have required pretty much everything. It seems the new improved diesel fuel with no sulfer in it causes the valves to hammer into the seats pretty bad and requires the replacement of all the seats with hardened ones as well as replacement of the valves and guides. The price included hot tanking the head, checking for cracks and flat surfacing it also.It doesn't do any good to just grind the valves and cut the seats. This drops the valves down in the head too far and makes for real hard starting and smoking. The last 4 cyl. diesel crank I had done cost me around $425. It was turned .010-.010 and was sent back with a matched set of main and rod bearings. It was grooved fairly badly and was welded up and remachined.

In your opinion, if the crank miked' O.K and thee were no deep grooves. Would it be necessary to have it turned?

If there are no deep grooves or scratches and it mikes within spec, roll a set of bearings in it.Usually the worst bearing surface is the front main from the extra load overtight fanbelts put on it.I have had luck running a .001 under bearing in those cases to close p the clearance. If you have used a good quality oil,and not run it low, usually the cranks are OK if it is not a high hour engine.

Be sure to have the head checked for cracks!
