Like Bob said it could be the cooler bypass valve stuck and not allowing the oil to flow through the cooler. If you"ve got one of the infrared thermometers check the temp of the lines coming off the pump and the return line as it leaves the valve block as sort of a baseline, then check the temp going into and then out of the cooler itself. If your getting an appreciable amount of temp difference across the cooler then it"s probably not the valve and you need to look elsewhere. I haven"t had a call to do anything to the main pumps of a 225 yet but I do know it runs two big positive displacement pumps. If they are vane pumps, and I know CAT loved the big Vickers pumps, I have seen the inside them wear out the casing where the vanes ride. What happens is they somehow get worn with a wavy/ washboard pattern. In some instances it may not effect the performance of the machine, at least not to a noticable degree, but will cause the system to heat uncontrollably. I ran into a machine a few years back that had two different pumps with that wear pattern. It would overheat in about 15 minutes of hard use but otherwise it was running fine. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Wayne all cat hoes have piston pumps for the main system. That one 1980 is close to the time they went from two Cat pumps to the single Rexroth with two main pumps and pilot pump in one housing.

They have a cooler bypass valve body that both cooler lines connect to. Could be stuck open. If the oil isn't going through the cooler the lines between valve and cooler will not be as hot as other lines.

Heat is caused by oil leakage through an "oriface" thats forcing oil to spray through a small opening..Cylinder packing , relief valve , cooler relief valve..Anything not acting quite right?? Could be an indicator that something is leaking internally...Hydraulic function leaking down ??
