Ford 550 Backhoe Transmission Problem

I recently purchased a 550 backhoe with a 4X4 Power reversing transmission. When I run it about 1 to 1 1/2 hours the tractor will not move. The person I bought it from said the transmission had been rebuilt within the last 2 years and had been used very little. I can turn off the tractor and let it sit for an hour or so and it will go again only not as long. I have changed the fluid and filter with no effect. Someone suggested the screen in the bottom of the transmission may be clogging, then when I shut it off, it disperses. But to get to it, I will have to break the tractor apart. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything I can try before I break the tractor apart? Thanks.

Hi,
No expert, my jd 350B dozer has a hydraulic reverser, worked fine when cold, once heated up the oil thinned and long story short, the internal leaks in the reverser became more evident when oil thinned, the machine would not push. Hooked up oil guage and noted low preasure once warmed up.
Mechanic tore down reverser and showed me the warn internal seals, rebuild, works perfect.
I knew it was not the pump because the reverse pack in the reverser got full preasure but not the forward pack.

Are your engine RPMs up? I've got a 755 with shuttle shift and it wouldn't move. Couldn't get the engine above 1200rpm. Turned out to be clogged engine air filters. Ford had a tester for flow/pressure testing the oil circuit. Check with your NH dealer. They may lend/rent it out (Mine wouldn't). Maybe crack a line to the cooler when it's working and not working to see difference. Mechanic told me those shuttle shift trans were "bullet-proof". I've got to believe it's something simple. You're right about the filter at the bottom of the sump. No way to get to it except teardown. Good luck & post back with what you find.

Make sure your batteries are up. That has a electric shuttle selonoid to activate the reverser I found this out the hard way when my batt wire on my alt broke and the batteries went low
