TD-6 starter woes

I recently acquired a TD-6 and in order to get it out of the shed in which it has been housed, I need to start it.

The starter when activated simply rotates without engaging the flywheel. My suspicion is that the starter drive is badly crudded up and so the starter needs service. How do I remove it? I can see three bolts in the starter pinion housing but am not sure if the starter will come out through the top or does it have to go out the bottom. Does anyone have experience with this? If so, any hints will be appreciated. Also is the electrical system positive or negative ground?
Thanks.

Don
Check out the above link. There is a discussion on the positive ground issue. Do some searching around the site for other good TD-6 information

To clarify I am refering to what I know about my rig which is a 1952 model or first series. They are 12 positive ground from the factory. If it has been converted to an alternator then it would be a negative ground. I believe that the second or 61 series are the same and the direct start 6 cylinder 62 series I am not sure what ground they are.

The starter will come out through the top. You have to remove some fuel lines and maybe the seperator bowl housing. I would check before pulling the starter if you have a good 12v+ at the starter so that it kicks hard enough to get the bendix to move. Low voltage and slow spinning will not engage the bendix.

Thank you Mr Galvin for your prompt reply. Is this electrical system 12 volt or 6 volt?
Positive or negative ground?

Thanks,
