How Good is a Sherman Hoe?

I am interested in buying an old ford 800 w/ a sherman hoe on it. I need to dig some ditches and move some dirt around. I'll also use it to to move roll bales and other things like that.

Since I won't be putting a lot of hours on it, I don't want to spend too much money.

Are these pretty good machines? Do the Sherman hoes dig well on a 44hp tractor?

Thanks for any info.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello; I still use mine all the time. 861 Ford diesel, 772 Ford loader. I've had this backhoe for 25yrs. Very handy on the farm. I finally rebuilt all the hoe rams 2yrs ago, and some welding on the bucket, but that's it. Really good on fuel also. Also all of a sudden, folks will really what to get to know you better!!! Good Luck Bob

I had an 860 with a Sherman. It was my first hoe and it made a good learning tool. Worked OK and could dig faster than I could run it at first. Good working machine seemed to function OK. Simple to work on and most parts were generic replacements. Beat the heck out of digging with a shovel! That said a more modern machine will dig circles around one. But if the price is right and you are just using it for your own work get it.
