Hi all,

I have a Case model 32 backhoe mounted on an Allis Chalmers HD4 crawler. It is the Extendable Boom model. I have two questions; what is the process for extending the boom? It has several pins but I am not sure which to remove and just how to extend it.

The other question involves the crowd cylinder. It is leaking at the fitting near the ram end and I need to remove it so I can tighten things up. What is the best way to do that?

If anyone has a copy of the manual for this thing I sure whould like to see it!

Thanks for any and all help.

Randy

The operator's manual for the 32 loader and hoe is available from Case, it would answer a lot of ?? about the unit. I bought one back in '01. Lot less than $150.

Extending the boom is an all manual affair.
Extend the boom/dipper/bucket out horizontal to the left or right so you the operator can eye ball pin alignment, bucket on the ground.
Remove the cottor pin in the clevis pin for the 1-3/4 dia, pin and remove the clevis pin.
Remove the 1-3/4 dia. pin (may have to jiggle boom to relieve binding)
Fold the bucket(on the ground) to extend (pull) boom (may have to jiggle dipper control to align hole)
The holes should be aligned when the extended boom is against the forward stops.
Replace the 1-3/4 dia pin and clevis plus cotter pin.

I'm a little confused on your crowd cylinder leaks?? On mine the steel line is on top with ready access to fittings. They are standard "O" ring boss type fittings. Maybe you just need tightening or replacement of the "O" ring.

Thanks again Old Magnet,

What I meant about the boom cylinder leaking is that the hydraulic fluid elbow at the rod end is buried inside the boom and seems pretty impossible to reach. Like you said, there is a steel line on top but only the fixed end is accessible. I don't see an obvious way to fix the leak without removing the whole cylinder.

Hey Old Magnet,

Thanks for the advice on extending the boom. On my model 32 hoe the body of the boom cylinder sticks into the hollow boom at least 12" (probably a lot more) and I can't even see the elbow at the rod end. Isn't yours that way? Maybe if I completely extend the boom I could see it?

Your previous post said crowd cylinder fitting was leaking.
Boom cylinder is a different issue.

Sorry,

Guess I got my terms off. One source I read said that the long leg was called a crowd. Sounds like it is a boom eh? Anyway, how do I get the damn thing out? It looks pretty impossible.

Extend bucket and dipper arm and lower boom to ground level. Place board (1 x 5 x 42 in.) between cylinder and lines below so the steel lines do not get crushed. Remove pins and pull out cylinder. A hoisting device is required at least for installation. Install cylinder, install pin at tower and reconnect hoses. Extend piston rod (sliding on board)and pin at swing tower. Use hoist to leverage up the cylinder and controls to align pin holes. Install pin.

Rudy, I find your first question confusing.

"It is the Extendable Boom model. I have two questions; what is the process for extending the boom? It has several pins but I am not sure which to remove and just how to extend it."

To extend mine I just use the lever.

as far as the second question, "The other question involves the crowd cylinder. It is leaking at the fitting near the ram end and I need to remove it so I can tighten things up. What is the best way to do that?"

I followed the advice of another on this board. I left the cylinder attached at the ram housing end, and removed the piston. I forget the mans 'handle', but you can use the search at the top right of the page. As far as the manual, I bought a great manual off ebay for a $157.00, (U.S.)...sl

Thanks Steve,

I have been advised that I actually meant boom cylinder. Sorry for the goof.

Randy

PS - My unit has no power extend for the boom. It is all manual.
