I POSTED A PICTURE. MY CAV PUMP ON A TD5 IS LEAKING FUEL OUT THE BREATHER ON TOP. IS THERE A DRAIN PLUG? ALSO WHERE DO YOU CHECK THE OIL LEVEL. IS THE THE SIDE COVER WITH 2 SCREWS? THANKS, DARREN

I've got four of them and they've all been leaking out the breather for years. Mine are in B275 farm tractors - but they have the same BD144 engine with the CAV inline pump and air-governor.
I drain every spring and put oil in the pump. Then run rest of the year and let it bubble out the overflow all it wants. It's never hurt a thing - been doing it for at least 15 years. I will say this though. I have one newer BD144 with the CAV rotary, and it's a much better cold-starting engine.

In your other post I thought that it was a rotary CAV pump you had and till I seen the picture had forgotten about the inline type, the problem of having it leaking out the breather means that the governor housing is full, this is usually caused if the pigtail drain gets blocked or the oil is never changed in the pump and the little fuel that leaks in builds up and up,the pumping elements get a bit worn with age and the diesel that leaks past them should drain out the pigtail pipe some may leak into the oil, what to do now is find the drain on the bottom of the governor housing and drain the oil, fill it with the same oil you use in the engine through the large brass plug that"s to the right of the lift pump on the governor housing till it flows out,the oil in the pump should be changed every time the engine oil is changed, that type pump (A Bosch made under licence in the UK)has a rack and its a good idea not to leave it in the shutdown position when parking the machine, the reason for this is that with all injector pumps there is no direct link between the throttle lever and rack,it goes through a spring, should the rack stick the spring just expands and does not move the rack to run.
Good Luck.
AJ
