well I finally got it home and tore it down.

IT appears my trouble is the splines inside the torque converter are wiped out. The ones for the shaft that runs back through to reverser pump to the reverser clutch packs.

Splines on the shaft are good, the converter looks just like a car converter. Any body ever found one out of a car or pickup that would swap in?

The only other option I see is taking it down to the machine shop and cutting it open, welding a socket in put it back together and hex the shaft.

What oil is supposed to be in the tranny anyway?
I've been told 30weight motor oil is this right?

While I'm asking, since the reverser is out right now, there is a stack of shim on the clutch pack. Any clue how to setup the clutch pack? I'm quite sure there is some wear on them, probably enough that some of the shims could be removed to tighten it up a bit

Normally when you take a torque convertor in for a rebuild, they will change the spline shaft anyway if it shows any sign of wear, that's just what they do, part of the rebuild process. My experience is they use better than original parts and the result works better. Good luck!

Had that problem recently on a Case 580G and was surprised at how cheap the new unit was in comparision with the cost of other parts, you should inquire at your local transmission shop for a replacement unit,or they can put a new turbine in you old unit, the socket and hexing the shaft would not be a good idea,ie grinding off the hardened outer layer, the shaft will then have to be replaced as well as the torque, about the clutch it should mearsure a certain thickness and you would need to know what the specs are.
