I foolishly bought a 450 that sat for some years. I paid $4000 cdn. ,It runs like a top, has a 4 way bucket, but after I used it for 3 hours, the track loosened up.The adjuster on the right side moved back 1 inch and on the left a little less-resulting in a track drop of 4-5 inches. I tried to pump grease into the adjusters, ans they were plugged. I unplugged the right side, and got a fair bit of greasein, but no movement in the adjuster arm. Does it move as grease is pumped in or when? I'm considering making an alternate adjuster using the most forward bolt on the front of the adjuster slide bar. Has anyone done this? Essentially, it would then become a pull adjuster, as opposed to a push adjuster. Does this make sense?
I would appreciate your comments and advice.

Thanks

Ron

If your going through all the trouble of making spacers and what not, why not save some time and headache by replacing the track adjusters? At any rate, you can replace the zerk fittings, there about a quarter apiece. When you pump grease in, if the adjuster is full of grease, the tensioner creeps ahead about from one sixteenth to one eighth of an inch at a time. If your pumping grease and its spilling all over the place then your zerk fitting is clogged. Clean or replace. If the grease is going in pump it until it starts to offer some resisitance to the grease gun. Run the track a bit then put in more and so on so forth until either your seals spit out grease or the things tensions. If your tensioner piston rod is rusted and pitted very badly then it's probalby seized. Even if your free it up your tensioners are going to go out on you eventually. Just my two cents. Good luck bud!!

I just bought a Case 350 trackloader about 3 weeks ago, run it about 5 hours, the right track came loose, pumped it up came loose again in no time. Ordered a seal kit from Finney for $20. There is only a snap ring & 2 seals in it. Fixed my problem & was able to do it myself, maybe your 450 is the same???

MLD, can you install new seals without removing the track? Is there a shortcut?

This steel spacer that you are considering? Would it damage the 'female' side of the adjuster?

is the origianl one rusted out?

The steel spacer shouldn't since it will rest upon the out side of the ram housing body (sturdy stuff), and the other end will stop the idler wheel housing. It will lie on the main frame rail that supports the adjuster and idler. Seem clearer now?-will be abou 1 3/8 thick (to fit below the nut and 3-4 inches wide X 5 inches long on the left side adjuster and 5 1/8 inches on the right. What do you think?

I was going to pull out the cylinder manually-which I have done, then put a spacer made from 1 3/8 X 3 inch steel. This would have to be about 5 inches long. I would place this on the frame the adjuster is bolted to-between the piston body and the idler body to keep the space at a constant distance to tension the belt. This is a temporary fix so that I can use the machine. See any problems with this?

Thanks

Ron

If grease is going in and you can't get the cylinder to break loose, pump in as much as you can and lift that track off the ground with the bucket/blade and run that track as fast as it'll go for a little bit and then try to see if it'll take more grease. It's not a cure-all but I have gotten stubborn cylinders to finally break loose this way. As for a track adjuster fitting that won't take grease at all,I've had good luck with those grease buster tools that clear out plugged zerks. I got mine from snap-on but I've also seen them in the Napa catalog. GOOD LUCK!!

that is common for that you will have to replace the piston packing if it is not rusted out and if it is then you replace the hole adjuster

Regarding the original adjuster, sometimes there is air in the adjuster that has to work out. I don't know what model 450 you have, but the 'straght' 450 incorporates a series of wipers (in the stack on the piston). As far as unplugging the zerk. try a propane torch...sl
