There is a long dipstick in the Right Rear compartment.

Is that dipstick for the finals, or the transmission?

My 450C uses John Deere HY-GARD in everything. 6 qts. in each final drive, 7 gal. in each steering clutch housing, 8 gal. in the transmission, and 7 gal. in the hydraulic reservoir.

I must be cracking up, sorry but I thought we were talking about a 450C John Deere. Forget everything I said.

Not sure if this will help you or not, but I've got a 1968 model 450 track loader. Under the seat is the dip-stick to measure transmission (TCH) fluid. The dip-stick port is also where you fill the transmission.

The finals have independent chambers and are filled with Gear oil. They each have a plug located about halfway up on the back of the finals that is the fill port. Finals should have oil level (or nearly level) with this port.

Finally there is of course the system hydraulic resovoir which on my machine is located high on the right side of the rear tank. Again the manual calls for TCH, although I've been told that is okay to use the newer Hy-Tran in the Hydraulic system. This resovoir has a dip-stick.

An older Case parts and service manager from Canada once warned me to also make sure that I keep the front idler wheels filled. There is a small allen-plug on each idler wheel. With the plug sitting at the 12-o'clock position, remove it and fill the idlers. I recall that they take 30 wt. motor oil. Apparently lots of people neglect this lube point until it is too late.

Hope this helps,
John

On my 450C the dipstick is on the left side an it checks the transmission and final drives as they have a common sump.

But the transmission and final's take different oils according to my 450 manual (not 450c).

Case TCH for tranny, and 90w for finals.

What oil do you use then for the 450c?

On the Case 450C the dipstick you are speaking of is for the transmission. It should take TCH. The final drives are checked by removing a plug about half way up the final, about the same level as where the "axle" comes out.
