have a 310sg backhoe. I was digging one day and pulled a very big rock/boulder out of the ground. I dug around it first, then worked it out of the hole. I had the extend-a-hoe out about half way when doing this. It was all the backhoe could do to get it out of the hole. Now for the problem...ever since I did that, at random, if I have the extend-a-hoe out sometimes it will retract when pushing against the pile of dirt without me touching them control for the extend-a-hoe. There are no external leaks (other then a minor leak coming from front bucket control valve) So, I guess there is an internal leak in the extend-a-hoe cylinder, or the valve for the extend-a-hoe has an internal leak? How can I figure what is wrong short of taking it to the dealer and giving them my arm and leg. sorry about the long story. Thanks for any help.

I would check extendo cylinder packings for leakage.. Lay out the boom at a comfortable angle so you can remove a hose to the extendo cylinder with the bucket hooked into a tree stump..Remove the hose that goes to the barrel end [ opposite the chrome rod end] and cap the hose that was removed from the cylinder..You might need a jumper hose so you can direct any leakage oil into a bucket..Start the machine and retract the extendo cylinder so you're pulling against the stump..when you put a load on the extendo cylinder at just above idle speed , there should be no steady flow of oil from the jumper hose to the bucket..If the cylinder is moving , there will be a flow..If necessary go to the cylinder stop and continue to power the cylinder..If there is a flow of oil the cylinder packing is leaking ..If there's no oil flow , the cylinder isn't leaking..You will need to check valve problems..Like maybe circuit relief valves...
